MANILA — Filipino World War II veterans have only about six weeks to apply for the lump-sum payment of $9,000 for Filipino citizens and $15,000 for US citizens, United States Ambassador Kristie Kenney said.

She reminded those eligible for the one-time payment authorized by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 that the deadline is Feb. 16, 2010, and will not be extended.

“It can’t be extended. The law, our Congress, is very clear…We don’t want to miss anyone. And application is free,” she said.

Kenney said the application process is easy to do and can be done online, by phone, or in person.
