Editor's Note: "Gaze at the compass of fortunes spinning." A lyric sung in one of the videos in the show "Celebrating the Art of Shanghai," currently at the Asian Art Museum in San Francisco. Many contemporary Chinese artists are documenting and responding to the changes in the compass of China's fortune. A few of those artists are in the Shanghai show. Britta Erickson is the curator of the modern section of the Shanghai exhibit. As a scholar and a writer, she has closely followed the fortunes of the contemporary art scene in China.
