Editor's Note: The phoenix-like rise of Japan after the catastrophic defeat of World War II is often presented as a success story of how one nation, conquered and defeated, can reinvent itself with dignity, honor and economic clout. The devastating surrender of 1945, however, still casts a long shadow. David Peace's novel Tokyo Year Zero recreates a Tokyo that is still shattered in the aftermath of the war. Bombed out, American occupied and its morale shattered, the city is racked by the mysterious murders of young women.

The book is based on a true story.
