It's also one the rest of the world views with the most apprehension, fearful that the future of Islam will be determined in the caves of Tora Bora. Others view it exclusively through the veil of the Hijab, or the controversy over women leading prayer. If there is a battle for the soul of Islam, is one side trying to drag it back into 7th century Arabia whence it came? Reza Aslan has an MFA in fiction, but he is also a professor of Islamic and Middle Eastern studies. He is the author of No god but God: The Origins, Evolution, and Future of Islam.
