Indian American candidate Surya Yalamanchili toppled David Krikorian to win the Democratic nomination for Congress in Ohio’s 2nd District in the Cincinnati area. Yalamanchili will now face off in November against Republican incumbent Congresswoman Jean Schmidt, who bested three GOP challengers in the Ohio primary May 4, reports India-West.

In unofficial results, Yalamanchili, a former Procter & Gamble executive and 2007 contestant on “The Apprentice” reality TV series, received 10,004 votes, or 40.82 percent, to 9,220 for Krikorian. Third place finisher Jim Parker, a health administrator, garnered 5,285 votes, or 21.56 percent.

Krikorian, a businessman, had been the target of criticism that he made disparaging comments about Yalamanchili’s foreign-sounding name at a campaign appearance. He however denied that, and told the local press after the election that he attributed his defeat to his opponent playing “the race card.”
