San Francisco has attracted national attention for being a sanctuary city for immigrants, which means that city officials are not supposed to ask questions about immigration status. However, on June 8, San Francisco police and federal immigration authorities or ICE became collaborators in a program called Secure Communities or S-COMM. San Francisco’s own sheriff didn’t want to be part of S-COMM, but attorney general Jerry Brown said the city couldn’t opt out. A month after S-COMM went into effect a coalition of immigrant rights groups are joining hands to oppose S-COMM in San Francisco. Sandip Roy discusses the effects of  S-COMM with Francisco Ugarte, who is an immigration attorney at Dolores Street Community Services in San Francisco.
