BROOKLYN – The two men who beat an Ecuadorean immigrant to death were sentenced Thursday to 37 years in prison. Keith Phoenix was convicted of murder as a hate crime. Hakim Scott was convicted of manslaughter.

José Sucuzhañay and his brother were attacked in December 2008 while walking home arm-in-arm after a party. The attackers reportedly mistook the brothers for a gay couple, and yelled anti-gay and anti-Hispanic slurs at them before beating Sucuzhañay to death.
