MEXICO CITY — Five city police officers and a transit officer were arrested Friday in connection with the killing of a Mexican mayor. Thirty-eight-year-old Edelmiro Cavazos, mayor of the town of Santiago in the northern Mexico state of Nuevo Leon, was kidnapped on Sunday. His body was found three days later.

The murder comes amid increasing violence in northeast Mexico attributed to a dispute between the Gulf cartel and its former allies, the Zetas, a drug cartel made up of many former Mexican military and police. A gubernatorial candidate in the neighboring state of Tamaulipas, was killed a week before the election. A mayoral candidate in Tamaulipas was shot in May.
