India, it's often said, lives in many centuries simultaneously. High- tech cities with glitzy malls are as much a part of India as ash smeared holy men who frequent cremation grounds. But while those images are often a part of National Geographic specials, few go into the lives of those ash smeared men and who they were before they started living in those cremation grounds. William Dalrymple's book Nine Lives explores the lives of nine ordinary men and women who have led extraordinary lives of faith; a Buddhist monk takes up arms against the chinese; a Jain nun starves herself to death. Dalrymple followed these stories of faith into skull strewn cremation grounds and mountain monasteries.
