The world’s biggest migration story does not happen across borders. The long march in contemporary China has been from inland villages to the factory cities along the coast. That’s where our clothes, TVs, shoes and toys are made. Once a year, during Chinese New Year, the people who make those shoes and clothes, make an annual journey home. There are over 130 million migrant workers in China. That makes for a lot of people trying to go home at once. Documentary filmmaker Lixin Fan stunningly conveys that story in his film Last Train Home by following one Chinese family on that journey.

Last Train Home opens today in the Bay Area.
