“East is east and west is west and never the twain shall meet,” Rudyard Kipling said. Actually east and west are meeting and mating in ways Kipling could not have imagined, especially in California. Essayist and writer Andrew Lam has been mapping these two worlds for many years. His first book Perfume Dreams won him a Pen American award and his essays on NPR won him a national audience. His latest book East Eats West – Writing in Two Hemispheres, explores how the food cultures of these two worlds merge around him and within him.

Andrew Lam will be at the Mechanic's Institute in San Francisco with Richard Rodriguez on September 16th at 6pm.

He will also introduce East Eats West at the Asian Chef Association gala Sept 26th and the Asian American Theatre Company Oct 3rd.
