LOS ANGELES -- La Opinión is endorsing San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom for California Lieutenant Governor over his opponent Abel Maldonado, a Latino Republican from Southern California. Editors say they were turned off by Maldonado's use of images of undocumented criminals during his campaign.

Editors note that Maldonado has earned their support in the past for his "politically independent spirit and common sense." But they write that they are "deeply disappointed that in this election, he has opted for an opportunistic strategy of using images of undocumented criminals to earn political points." La Opinión calls this tactic "unacceptable," and adds that Maldonado's charges against Newsom on this issue are "inaccurate."

La Opinión calls Newsom's leadership "creative, resourceful, and sensitive," citing his creation of microloans as an alternative to payday loans.
