Third-year UCLA student Alexandra Wallace, who went viral over the weekend with a racist YouTube rant about Asian students in the university library, has issued an apology through the school’s newspaper.

“Clearly the original video posted by me was inappropriate,” she said in the statement. “I cannot explain what possessed me to approach the subject as I did, and if I could undo it, I would. I’d like to offer my apology to the entire UCLA campus. For those who cannot find it within them to accept my apology, I understand.”

The statement, which was sent to the the Daily Bruin on Monday morning, is short and simple, but Wallace no doubt understood the severity of the situation. According to a campus police spokeswoman, Wallace contacted university police Sunday evening after receiving multiple death threats via e-mail and phone.

Police advised her to take a number of precautions, including rescheduling her finals—y’know, the ones she was studying for when she kept on getting interrupted with “Ohhhh. Ching chong ling long ting tong oooooooh” from Asian students on their cell phones.

The university has also issued an apology. On Monday afternoon, Chancellor Gene Block sent an e-mail to students and released its own video in response to Wallace’s YouTube hit.

“I am appalled by the thoughtless and hurtful comments of a UCLA student posted on YouTube,” Block said in the statement. “Speech that expresses intolerance toward any group of people … is indefensible and has no place at UCLA.”

The Asian American Studies Department and Center at UCLA has also issued a response, offering some context to the controversy:

“Asians in the Library” is a travesty on many levels, representing an attack on Asian and Asian American students and their families and undermining UCLA as a global university with deep ties to communities and institutions in Asia and other parts of the world. It entails a “new racism” by foregrounding students who speak Asian languages and have different family traditions, as it insidiously groups and attacks UCLA’s American-born as well as our international students of Asian ancestry. As the only University of California campus without a diversity requirement, UCLA surely needs to implement a diversity requirement that will expose every student to the task of living civilly with people of different origins, backgrounds, orientations, and beliefs, whether they are born here or come from abroad.

Asian American Studies at UCLA emerged from the Civil Rights struggles of the 1960s and 1970s to enrich the experience of the entire university by contributing to an understanding of the long neglected history, rich cultural heritage, and present position of Asian Americans in our society. This type of prejudice and use of derogatory words cannot be tolerated at a campus that claims that “Diversity is a core value of UCLA.”

UCLA’s Asian Pacific Coalition, a progressive umbrella organization representing Asian-American clubs and organizations on campus also issued a statement via Facebook, in which they show Wallace they can fend for themselves, with grace:

As evidenced by the responses of outrage and hurt from our community, it is clear that this student’s comments can be considered a hate speech, an act of discrimination, harassment, and profiling.

However, we must address the many ignorant comments stemming from our own community in reaction to Wallace’s comments. While we condemn this student’s remarks as not only ignorant and offensive but hateful as well, we believe that we as a community can do better than to resort to the student’s tactics of throwing out divisive words, which only perpetuate a culture of racism and sexism on both sides.

The university has not taken any action agaisnt Wallace at this time. Robert Naples, associate vice chancellor and dean of students, told the Daily Bruin that officials are examining the video, the student code of conduct and Wallace’s First Amendment rights.

“(Wallace) has made judgments about a certain race, and people have made judgements about her, but we’ve got to make the correct judgments in the dean’s office, and in order to do that we need to know everything first,” Naples told the school paper.

She should be kicked out of UCLA. People liker don't belong there. The statement that offended people the most was about the tsunami in Japan. People are having a national devastation and all she can do it criticize and make fun of the situation. I surely don't see her donating money to the red cross or any other relief foundations!

expel her and if ucla decides not to, well then that speaks volumes about the university.

Relax, everyone. What she was saying is that Asians tend to ignore the "quiet" rule of the library. She mentions that "no one" should be on their cell phones in the library (True). Of course, at UCLA, there are a large percentage of Asian students, therefore, "Asians in the Library" truly refers to the majority class at UCLA. Let's not crucify her for her ignorance. She was just looking to get some quiet in the library.

And if you get a call from a relative in Japan, who has survived the tragedy, at least make a move to go for the exit, or bathroom. We are all sensitive to the devastating events in Japan, but respect the environment you are currently in, too.

Regards,
Asian-American

Her apology wasn't really an apology for her racist remarks. Read her statement carefully and you will realize that UCLA has dubbed an explanation as an apology for her views. If UCLA does not discipline Alexandra Wallace, UCLA is supporting her racism. Even the UCLA Chancellor states she has a First Amendment right for her racism. The real question: how many people in UCLA, both faculty and staff feel this way? Does UCLA harbor racisim? Is UCLA racists? It is up to the Chancellor and his administration to prove to the world otherwise through actions and not just words.

What the young lady said was stupid and hurtful.
Nevertheless she must be around 19 I'm guessing---and who hasn't done something stupid and immature at 19?
Most of us don't make the mistake of posting our immature opinions on Youtube and even most who do.......don't have it go viral.
If she is honestly sorry for what she has said---I think it should be let go.

Alongside of all the terrible insults to Asians, or Asian-American students, she was way too much offensive bringing the issue of tsunami and earthquake victims.
I don't think there are many Japanese students in UCLA library checking up about earthquake.
Japanese do know library is the place for quiet study and reading.
She just wanted to do good old insult & injury tactics.
I bet she does not know who are Japanese, who are not. But it does not matter, because she just wanted to insult "ching chong "people according to her. So why not use natural disaster for wacking up the "disgusting poeple" some more, huh? Japanese earthquake victims will not forget this insensitive bigot so easily. May be KKK will hire her as a poster girl for its next operation. good for you, Alexandra.

Yes, she might be ignorant about the asian language with her ching chong ling a long, but she has a point. The library is meant for studying and if you wanna take or make a call, get out of the library and don't disturb the students trying to study.

I am an Asian American and I can't help but to NOT relax on a crucial topic like this. She should not have gone out of her way to call out a specific race, which is ONE of the many facts as to why Asians are upset. If she felt so strongly about "keeping quiet in the library" then she should have kept it simple with stating just that. If people who are not offended or offended for Asians or Asian Americans because of this absolutely and outragiously offensive "voiced opinion," then maybe you need to keep up with what's going on in Japan, ANOTHER reason why Asians are offended. Who the hell jokes about that? A worldwide devastation? If UCLA doesn't expell this girl, after claiming that they're a diverse school, then it most certainly speaks a lot about their codes of conducts. I wonder how many people, not even Asians in this matter, will avoid even applying at that school. Such a ruckus, but I respect her enough for the apology. I can say for my part, that I forgive her for her stupidity, but it won't help her from others reactions - verbal or nonverbal. I'll pray for her.
God Bless.

okay its not just asians who does this...ive seen some people of other races do same things as well...why she talking about asians? probably because its an asian majority school and if it was white majority it would be same thing..or black or watever. she was targeting racism and she couldve just have talked about how "people" in general. not directly towards asians...

Wow was this that big of deal? I can agree with her actually and the sad part is its not racist at all. I have Chinese friends and I respect Chinese people but when someone talks loudly on their cell phone while I'm studying I'm going to get mad. In this case I guess only Asians did that.

Phone lines in the tsunami affected areas are dead. The rest of my family has been trying to call/text our loved ones without success ever since the earthquake. I wish she will learn what empathy means, and not mock about the tsunami. I wish she will stop for a minute, and think about what it's like to suddenly lose majority of your relatives and many friends that you grew up with all at once. Many of us are in despair, not having any information about whether or not even just one of them is still alive. Survivors in the affected areas can't even make domestic calls. They certainly won't be able to make international calls. Some refugee camps finally obtained special phones so that the survivors can call one person for "1 minute." We are desperately waiting for that one special call sitting in front of our phones all day everyday...

Freedom of speech isn't really free at all. There are prices to pay for what you say. You can only say so much until you get yourself into serious trouble. If UCLA does not expel her whats the point for Asian/Asian-American students wanting to attend a university that promotes/supports racism? From what I remember from any college student handbook Racism is terms for expelling the student. She should have known living in Los Angelus or CA in general there are many, many Asians everywhere.

The bleach blond bimbo made it a point to disparage ASIAN people talking on the phone and broadcast loud and clear than the Charlie Chan era racist stereotyping is still alive and well in America. How insensitive and ignorant can she be when Japan is grieving the death of TENS of THOUSANDS of dead men, women and CHILDREN resulting from one of the worst natural disasters in history? As Asian American of Japanese decent sick and tired of racism, I say kick her out. As a member of the human race, I say kick her out. As a citizen whose taxes pay for public universities, I demand they kick her out. If they allow her to stay, that speaks volumes about UCLA but then again, it would not surprise me.

-to me it sounds like she was jealous so she's saying "why not get back at them and complain about asian's one little flaw- them talking in the library... yea, that's bad enough, wooo!" ahahhahahahhaahhaha

She is an unfortunate, stupid, racist tool of the Right Wing--unfortunately that does not change the fact that she has changed the way that many of us feel about the standards of UCLA. For that simple reason, UCLA needs to ask her to find her epiphanies on a different campus.

F--k all you white haters. She is right. Exit the library to make your calls. By what right do you disrupt the student body by your rudeness? Solution: Further your education in china. I'm sure you will not be put off by a nation chewing it's meal w/open mouths.

How is that video at all Racist? She's talking about people who happen to be Asian who talk on the cell phones while shes trying to study. Obviously, if Asians are doing that around her then they think it's okay. Where's the common sense people? Your basically saying nah, it's okay to not follow those rules in the Library if your Asian but it's bad to express your feelings via personal forums where your opinions should have nothing to do with whether or not you are a good student. Common sense people! UCLA is dumb. She's in no way making fun of anyone. Ching chong choung was said because she is too dumb to actually know the real words. Just like if it was the other way around an Asian person would say, "Uh I uh geta mmhmm yeah coo."

Awwww, come here mommy will make it all better. Let me clue ya California, no matter how much a person is protected it's gonna happen, everyone will have their feelings hurt, suck it up, call her a bitch and move on. Pretty soon it'll be wrong to acknowledge we all eventually die in California because it will make people sad.... Oh how I wish for the Oceans to rise enough to destroy the whole state full of liberal D bags!!!!!

This has seriously been blown out of proportion considering the multitude of worse crap ALL over the internet, not just YouTube.

Want something to be "racist" about? The arrogant black jackass blaring his crap...errr rap at 8AM. NO ONE on a sensibile level gives a flying fuck about your system, or the horrible shit you spam the local few blocks with. No, Obama being president doesn't entitle you to throw the race card when someone say's "Turn that shit down!"
