"American Teacher": Overworked, Underpaid, and Under Seige
EDITOR'S NOTE: With school districts across the U.S. in financial turmoil, many teachers are being pushed out of the profession because they feel overworked, underappreciated—and because they don't earn enough to support themselves and their families. The new documentary American Teacher, produced by writer Dave Eggers and Nínive Clements Calegari, founders of the 826 National tutoring centers, tells the stories of four public school teachers on the front lines, including Jonathan Dearman of San Francisco.
New America Media spoke with Dearman a few days before the film's May 3 world premiere at the San Francisco International Film Festival.
