The ACLU announced Saturday that it plans to sue the state of Alabama over its new immigration bill modeled after Arizona’s SB 1070. The bill passed the state legislature Thursday night and awaits the governor’s signature. Cecilia Wang, director of the ACLU’s Immigrant Rights Project, called the bill “even stricter” than the Arizona law. In addition to provisions that mimic the Arizona law, the Alabama bill would require that students present legal proof of residence before enrolling in school, and would criminalize the transfer or harboring of undocumented immigrants, among other restrictions.
