Korean churches in Southern California have come out against California’s passage last month of SB 48, otherwise known as the FAIR Education Act, which calls on public schools to incorporate the contributions of the LGBT community in textbooks, according to the Korea Times in Los Angeles. Church groups in the area have launched a campaign seeking to repeal the legislation.

On Monday, the National Council of Korean Churches and the American branch of the Christian Council of Korea held a press conference at the Korean Community Center in Los Angeles to discuss their stance on the issue. The meeting follows the launching of a petition drive last month at the offices of Governor Jerry Brown to protest the bill.

Speaking to the audience, the head of the national council, Pastor Jong-gi Min, said, "Since 2000, supporters of gay marriage in California have attempted to push through laws unpopular with voters." He added that opponents must rally to have the new law overturned.

Pastor Jeong-myung Song, head of the American offices of the Christian Council of Korea, said, "If we get the signatures we need, then we can put a referendum on the table to have the law thrown out." The Times notes that supporters of the petition are seeking some 65,000 signatures.

State Senator Mark Leno of San Francisco, a supporter of the bill, says that incorporating the contributions of homosexuals and other minorities into the curriculum of public schools will help reduce the social stigma and other challenges that members of these communities face.

Other groups opposed to the bill include the Stop 48 Campaign, which argues the new law will “teach children as young as five to not only accept but also endorse transgenderism, bisexuality, and homosexuality.”

Supporters of SB 48 describe such claims as inaccurate and “anti-gay rhetoric.” Groups including the Courage Campaign, which has launched a decline-to-sign drive, say the law is not about sex ed, adding that teachers and parents will be allowed to decide what is appropriate for individual classrooms.

Teaching children about sexuality should be up to families, NOT SCHOOLS.

I can't agree more: up to families, not government and not schools. I don't care who sleeps with whom and how, what is going on in someone's bedroom. But please stop bringing this issue in our schools. Stop introducing children in early ages to homosexuality or any sexuality. I read some letters from school to parents. I could not believe my eyes how it was introduced to kids: "If you are told that you are a boy, if you wear pants, it doesn't mean that you are a boy." The same goes about girls. Why?? Why 7 y.o. should be totally confused with this world? When kids are in the early stages of formation it's important for them to have stability and clarity around them... and they don't have it. In public schools they learn table of multiplication for years...they can't read well, but they are introduced to this? Why? Who is behind this and why? I am totally support Korean church.

What should be incorporated in the curriculum is not homosexual agenda, but good literature, mathematics, science, teaching of mutual respect not based on sex or color, so American kids would be able to compete with the world. We should teach children, how to manage money, basic of economics, may be even cooking classes so they would not think that bread is growing on the tree.

This bill has nothing to do with "indoctrinating children" . Why don't you people read the bill before making judgements.

We Asian Americans are sick and tired of Sacramento behaving as a lapdog to the homosexual community and sacrificing our values and interests. DO NOT come after our children to attack us and our family values. DO NOT take away our parental rights to raise our children. If lawmakers in Sacramento do not protect our our values and interests, we Asians will vote you out.

This is supposed to stop bullying? I think we should just teach our children to respect everyone. Why does sexuality need to be discussed to teach people not to bully and to respect each other?
I do not appreciate schools being used as a podium to teach morals and values to my children. I will teach them my families beliefs, morals and values. Including this in kindergarden curriculum is ridiculous as we do not teach heterosexuality at that age. Also, with all of the budget cuts this should not be a high priority for spending money.
If this is intended to show a different belief then stop preventing Christian beliefs and values from being included in the classroom! The hypocracy! Go about your lives and stop trying to tell children about what goes on in your bedroom!
