It's surprising to meet John Madden. He's a Hollywood film director, Oscar nominated for Shakespeare in Love, and yet, upon first greeting, he is a rather gentle soul who somehow ended up in the glamourous world of American cinema after years in radio in his native United Kingdom.

His films, including the critically acclaimed Captain Corelli's Mandolin, are often about history and his new film, The Debt, about World War 2, is no exception.

John Madden spoke with New America Now host Shirin Sadeghi about filmmaking, history and the obscured international stories that return to the light of day when someone makes a film about them.

New America Now is the radio program of New America Media. The program is hosted by
Shirin Sadeghi and is broadcast on 91.7 FM KALW San Francisco on Fridays at noon and Sundays at 3 pm.
