A report in the Korea Times notes that America was the largest importer of Korean military products between 2006 and 2011, with sales reaching $1.7 billion. Data from South Korea's Defense Acquisition Program Administration (DAPA) showed that the bulk of sales involved aircraft components and ammunition.

The article also noted that South Korea was the largest buyer of American weapons during the same period, followed by Germany, Israel, the United Kingdom and Turkey.

Turkey, which fought alongside United Nations and South Korean forces during the 1950-53 Korean War, was the second largest buyer of South Korean weapons, with sales reaching $1 billion.

Citing the data, South Korean lawmaker Seo Jong-pyo of the main opposition Democratic Party said the country’s arms industry had nosedived in 2006 to $253 million before rising steadily over the past four years. He added that Seoul has set itself a target of $4 billion in arms exports by 2020.
