Chinese Paper: Occupy Losing Steam
In his editorial, "Occupy and Removal", published on Tuesday, he wrote, "There were about a thousand protestors occupying the Oakland port, compared to a similar shutdown last month, where close to 10,000 people showed up. It was obviously much weaker."
Leung also commented that there was more coverage on the removal of protestors’ camps, which showed that local governments were less afraid of cracking down on protestors, which he believed is largely due to the loss of support and concerns from the public on the movement. But Leung also argued that governmental control was not the cause of the isolation of the movement, but more so, the nature of the protest.
"From the beginning, they (protestors) did not plan to start an organized social movement with ideologies and organization," he wrote. He said, "The movement starters believe this kind of volunteer-based individualized protest is enough to move things along, but actually, this kind of low impact, directionless protest in its nature would not deliver any success."
