African Americans in Dallas Target Korean Business
The African American community in Dallas has been protesting a gas station run by a Korean-born U.S. citizen in a predominately black neighborhood in South Dallas for over a month, taking issue with what they claim were racial remarks by the station’s owner.
The Korean government dispatched the consul general of the Korean Consulate General in Houston to the area yesterday to help resolve the issue, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade.
“We made emergent contact with the Korean community, requesting that its members restrain from an emotional response and examine their relationship with other communities,” an official of the ministry said.
According to the ministry and the local Korean community, the conflict occurred on Dec. 9, 2011, between the Korean-American owner of a gas station in southern Dallas and a black customer over the sale of gas.
The customer, complaining that the price of gas at the station was much higher than at other stations, demanded he be able to buy gas by smaller amounts than what the owner set as the minimum sales unit. The owner refused and told him to go to another station, to which the customer responded by telling the owner to go back to his country. The owner responded by telling the customer to go back to Africa.
That triggered a boycott of the gas station by the black community in the region, followed by them speaking out against Korean and other Asian immigrant communities.
The Los Angeles branch of the JoongAng Ilbo reported that leaders from the black community in the region also requested cooperation from the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), and the Nation of Islam.
The tensions are of concern to the Korean community in the U.S., with fears that the case may develop into a replay of the massive anti-Korean riot by African Americans in Los Angeles, which marks its 20th anniversary in April. The official of the ministry said the risk that this will happen remains slim so far, saying that the actions taken by the black community remain civil.
“It is also a conflict between U.S. citizens, so there is not much that we can do because it could be seen as inappropriately intervening,” the official said.
The Korean community in the U.S. said that the case reflects the underlying conflict between the two communities.
“We see the fundamental causes lie in the exclusivity of the Korean community, which is stingy in sharing with others, as well as the black community’s relative sense that the Korean community is depriving them of opportunities,” a member of the Korean community in the U.S. told the JoongAng Ilbo’s Los Angeles bureau.

What the. It was a tit for tat. Why you gotta tell someone to go back to their country? Blacks are more powerful than Koreans in the US. So they pretend like they are white people and can say anything they want and get away with anything they want to other minorities.

I am a Korean-American. I was born here in the United States. I think this could have been handled in a more mature way. There is no reason to be calling each other racial slurs or anything along the same lines just because over a dispute of a debit card limit. Whether the Korean store owner had just allowed that one-time transaction or the African-American Islamic Minister just walk away...this all could have just ended right there and then. I pray that this ends well and on a good note. I do not wish to see any aggressive violence on the streets between different people of different background of any kind. I know racial profiling and discrimination will be around, but I do hope this ends soon.

Let's face it: Koreans are hard-working, diligent business people that have made a name and a good living for themselves in America. Blacks are lazy and always want to be given a hand out or felt sorry for because they feel like the nation owes them something. Koreans don't make excuses or blame others for their shortcomings. No, they work their be-hinds off until they make it big. Yes they are selfish and stingy, but they are hardworking and took FULL advantage of the term democracy and making something of oneself. Unlike Koreans, blacks do everything they can to get a "free pass" and stand on the street corner wasting time. You won't see a Korean doing that here in Korean town in L.A. It's no wonder why the Asians and blacks are always at odds. Both groups are non-white minorities. Yet one seems to thrive so much more in the white collar work force than the other. So no excuses from either end...BTW, I am a white business owner that employes all sorts of races, so I know WTF I am talking about.

42 year old Korean-American. Lived in America 39 years. Been seeing the same old, same old, anti-social behavior (and quite frankly, anti-Asian racism) from blacks for over 30 years.
Finally, Whites in America are starting to wake up to this ridiculous behavior and their violent tendencies. If there's a riot, Whites will have your backs. Particularly, since this is Dallas, TX.
Rule of thumb: Be respectful & nice to everyone. But if blacks act-up, don't back down - ever.

Very unfortunate statement made by the Korean. It is not smart to insult the people whom you wish to be customers. All Blacks and all people of good will should not buy gasoline at that station. The Korean needs sensitivity training and a better education.

Blacks need to remember that if they won't do what the Koreans want they will find nothing by the last of the things they could possibly say! Koreans and Blacks are taking things left and right so when they discover there is an end, they will take it.
Thanks for nothing guys.

As a Korean American person, I am keenly aware of how racist most Koreans can be - especially as I work in an urban community. I'm not prone to side with my fellow Koreans. But this seems a bit ridiculous. First of all, it's not like the Korean owner had a monopoly on the gas station market so indeed, he had clear freedom of choice to go elsewhere. And he was the first one to egg on with the "go back to your country" taunt. You can't punch someone and then get upset when they hit you back. That's just lame.

Telling a Korean to go back to his country = OK
Telling an African to go back to Africa = Unacceptable
I feel sorry for the Korean guy. At least Koreans aren't an economic burden on the state. All blacks seem to do is complain about discrimination at every opportunity while collecting welfare.

This is way out of proportion.. to black people we look CHINESE..they can't even say Asian. they are so hypocritical in many ways.. i hope this goes away so the Korean guy can live his life. Of course black people get all mad about being called AFRICA.. but we shouldn't get mad being called CHINESE....WTF....

"Blacks are more powerful than Koreans in the US. So they pretend like they are white people and can say anything they want and get away with anything they want to other minorities. "
Since when can White people say anything about minorities? Whites are the only people that it is acceptable to criticize, minorities are off limits in uber-PC America. Furthermore, I don't blame the Korean man. The Black guy insulted him first so he shouldn't whine and cry when the Korean fights back. Frankly, I wouldn't want Blacks coming to my business. Too many of them are obnoxious, aggressive and think the world owes them something because "they be Black."

"All Blacks and all people of good will should not buy gasoline at that station."
Yeah sure "reverend", because a troublemaker showed up and declined to follow the rules and then told the Korean business owner that he should go back to his country but the Korean telling him to go back to Africa is racist right? And of course being the closet bigot you are you probably believe Africans can't be racist right? Don't make me laugh.
You and the rest of the black clowns are by yourselves. Nobody takes any of you seriously. You know why? You black supremacist assholes play the race card so often it's in pieces.Every time a black person is beat up, killed or insulted it's racism and it's a huge deal but apparently the mass epidemic of black people killing, raping, beating and acting racist towards white people and asian people for no reason is completely ignored. When a black person gets beat up for running his mouth it's racism but when a group of black kids attack a white person for no reason it's just kids being kids. Do I give a damn that he told a black troublemaking asshole to go back to Africa? No. Why should I? The troublemaker started it and told him to go back to his country which is equivalent to saying "Go back to Korea" but let me guess, no sensitivity training for him right?
Ask yourself why it's always the Koreans that have the businesses despite being immigrants and why they have to put up with blacks robbing them and shooting them especially in Oakland, CA. Why is it never black businesses being robbed by Koreans? The Koreans have been here long enough, they've wised up and they're tired of this bullshit pity game blacks perpetuate on everyone.

that can be a RACIST BEHAVIOR.
The Black guy and Korean guy both said that way,

Funny thing is that Black guy considers only himself as the Victim.
Even the guy is not aware of what he said first - "Go Back to your country",
and the fact is telling that himself is the MOST RACIST.
Stop Racism! you both are stupid. I'm ashamed as a Korean and
this incident seems only from the two guys screwed up behavior for money.
Don't try to generalize and stop trying to get big deal out of nothing

Why were the gas prices higher at this station than elsewhere? Why was there a minimum amount required for purchase? I'm a Whitey girl who was stationed in Korea in the Army. Because I grew up in LA among friends more dark than not, yet I date Asian men (can speak, read and write Korean) I was distraught at the clashing between my African Amer buddy's and my Korean friends. Love them both. Koreans should understand the hell African Americans have gone thru and go thru. African Americans should realise Other people with black hair and brown eyes aren't their enemy. African Americans are boisterous. Koreans, old school especially, are not. Koreans should not gouge people in the communities where they run their businesses. African Americans should remember how they were taught to treat their elders. When I taught English in Korea, many of my students took me to task about rasism in America toward African Americans. I was pleased. Many differences between two good groups of people. But if one price gouges in a struggling community, ya gonna have problems.

Questions: Why are the gas prices are so different by gas stations?
1. Because of Racism in US
2. Because of Market Economy in US

"When I taught English in Korea, many of my students took me to task about rasism in America toward African Americans. I was pleased. "
Why? African-Americans are the MOST favored group in the USA. Koreans have no room to talk, they do not allow anyone not Korean to immigrate permanantly to their country and are very racist towards non-Koreans. Koreans in Korea have no Blacks so no experience or understanding.

WhiteyGirl - What the article does not clearly show is that the loudmouth black guy tried to buy his gas with a debit card. There is no minimum limit at this gas station UNLESS you're using a debit card. And being a supreme idiot the loud mouth black guy thought there was racism going on here. What the idiot didn't know is that almost every store that allows a debit card has a minimum transaction limit, you know why? Because it costs the gas station owner money to process the transaction, debit cards have fees! So he makes a minimum limit so he's not paying more in fees than he is on gas. This is done by almost every company, even universities apply fees to debit card transactions, but being an ignorant poor asshole the black guy has to have a problem with it and hassle the Korean trying to make a living.
Look, it's how the market works. If you price your goods too high you go out of business. This isn't a unique commodity we're talking about, IT'S GASOLINE. It's EVERYWHERE. If the Korean gas station owner was doing something wrong he'd be out of business already.
Black people think they're the only ones who can and should be loud and militant, **** that. I'm waiting for the time to pass when Asians realize they don't have to sit here and pander to that chimpout bullshit. They've contributed to the country, one can argue they've done far more than blacks have done and they've done it quietly. I'll say it again, black people rob businesses and shoot Korean business owners while the Koreans are the ones setting up businesses and trying to quietly eke out a living. But if you keep pushing Koreans they'll get louder. You think the Korean laundromat stereotype is funny? Maybe, but not as funny as the black guy who runs, shoots and steals and sits home all day collecting welfare and using his EBT card to rack up $800.00 of junk food with taxpayer's money.

Why is the card in the deck? Just making that statement alone indicated a closed minded racist statement! This article seems to have put a twist on what was really said... So, what are these stores mostly established in black neighborhoods again? AND majority of them are rude and disrespectful! I guess blacks don’t have a right to be social conscious or respected? Why is there a gas minimum? It may not be you today, but it could be you tomorrow.

"Just making that statement alone indicated a closed minded racist statement!"
You're right? Go pick on the Korean guy if you want as long as you give equal treatment to the black guy. If you don't, you're biased and your opinion isn't worth a shit.
"This article seems to have put a twist on what was really said..."
Where's your proof?
"So, what are these stores mostly established in black neighborhoods again?"
Unless you're a racist, who cares where they're established? Why does this matter again?
"AND majority of them are rude and disrespectful!"
So don't shop there. What's your point? I can say the majority of black people are rude and disrespectful, does that seem fair to you? It seems fair to me.
"I guess blacks don’t have a right to be social conscious or respected?"
This isn't about social consciousness or respect, it's about two people having an argument that was started by the black guys refusal to respect the rules of the gas station. Don't talk about respect or social consciousness, if anyone was disrespected it was the korean guy. Before the black guy strolled in and decided to cause trouble his life was fine. You want respect? Treat others with respect.
"Why is there a gas minimum?"
Again who cares? Are you implying that there's a racist reason for this? Have you even bothered to think about this or ask the gas station owner yourself? Who cares if there's a gas minimum? That's the policy. If you don't like it, GO SOMEWHERE ELSE. It's really simple. Yet this guy strolls in and argues about it.
"It may not be you today, but it could be you tomorrow"
What could be me? If I went to a gas station I would have enough cash on me and I wouldn't expect a gas station to bend their rules for me. I would also treat the people with respect. So when you say it could be me tomorrow, that's not true. Something like this will NEVER happen for me. I have too much respect for other people to do something like the black guy did. This is only a problem for this one black guy and the troublemakers in the community, for the rest of the normal people in this country it's a non-issue. Jesus christ you act as if he had a noose thrown over his neck or as if he was shot.

After all, the guy who turns out to be a MINISTER (lol) started the fight first, telling the Korean owner to go back to "china." And, this conflict is between two racist individuals, so I dont understand why this minister is trying to present his own conflict as a racist threat to the black community, when in fact, it is absolutely NOT.

And, this conflict is between two racist individuals, so I dont understand why this minister is trying to present his own conflict as a racist threat to the black community, when in fact, it is absolutely NOT.

Not surprise....
I am a korean who married to an American, and I must say that I had so much hard time when I was dating for 5 years.
Racial comment and stereotypical views are quite common among Koreans including my own relatives.
Especially, discrimination toward colored people is terrible, that include to East Asian people.
Yes, it is real shame because Koreans have warm sharing hearts I believe.
However, in terms of racial discrimination, Korea still has long way to go. (I hate to say it but It is true in many cases).
It is very strange that many Koreans still wants to live in US, yet, hate Americans or look down on other races.

My state actually has laws to prevent stuff like this from happening. Walking into a business and starting a fight with the owner is frowned upon in North Carolina. The man that started the argument would have been thrown in jail and our black community would have called him out for being an idiot. Most black people in my state don't just side with people based on race. They actually understand the difference between right and wrong. I guess many black people in Dallas don't believe that there is a right path or a wrong path, they just see color. I'm not surprised to see racism alive and well in Dallas.

Koreans specially the ones who came here to the US are rude, it's in their culture specially to other races. They and like the japanese belong to a warrior culture and are aggressive when provoked. The ones who were born in the USA and grew up here are more american in manners and culture.
It is just a misunderstanding of cultures that is going on here.

I usually do not take to time to comment on blogs, however, I think this is a good lesson learned for both sub- groups. As an AA (Afro-Amer) who lived in Asia and travelled extensively, I can state with conviction that AA and Koreans do not have a solid working relationship.
On one hand, Koreans have the benefit of leaving a sovereign government, a Korean controlled economy, and law making and management system driven by Korean – no AA influencing policies or running gas station over there albeit. On the other hand, AA, having lived in this country, shaped its policies (with what menial influences that had), undergo majority backed (whites) initiatives that support small business owners in AA communities that price gouge at the gas pump and on snack shelves. In this dynamic, we have an Asian owner, “wow a real super hero, who probably didn’t hire any AA on his payrolls (but he is doing this country a favor)” who didn’t obey the laws of etiquette, which dictates that he should have explained the situation (minimum debit limit) to the African American customer. The man should have simply explained the costs associated with the transaction, and politely asked him to visit another location : essentially treated him like an American Japanese, American Chinese, American Arab, or better yet and American Red-Neck who would have crushed his ass through a chamber of commerce.
On this note, do I think the black man is a racist? No.. I think he was frustrated behind seeing Asians who come from a country with a white majority help pretend they have merited their way through a political and administrative system equivalent to what blacks undergo. Do I think the Korean is a racist, not totally, but if so, he is a dumbass because, I would not open a business in a neighborhood of people I can’t stand – think south Africa.. hate black people, who the fuc#” is feeding their revenue stream! However, I think the interaction is valuable because it demonstrates, at the substantive level, what both groups are thinking. Obviously, the black person thinks that Koreans (and some Asians) should return to Korea and pursue his ambitions (isn’t it better in Korea (or india, Pakistan, china, and certainly Japan, than the U.S). And the Korean was right too, the blacks should return to Africa – more diamonds, gold, rivers, resources, and opportunities ( in fact, there are more successful African Americans in Africa per capita than they are in the U.S – but you will not find it on Bloomberg..)
So, as for Koreans thinking they outperform blacks – when variables like structured racism (and Koreans know this because they tell each other not to hire blacks, or they face it when they are in Japan when Japanese treat them like shit when they try to become citizens), drugs in our neighborhoods planted by cops and government coverts, family disruptions “brought on by all these fucking races who come from countries with a homogenous race,” blacks make leaps and bound performances over Koreans.. It amazing to see Koreans, team with whites, and other Asians to compete with blacks in America!!!
Why compete with blacks ( a minority with a contaminated media report) while you have other Asian countries to compete with – china, Japan, India, Nigeria, south africa, Liberia, Ghana, etc.. You are a race of people with a sovereign country competing with an ethnic minority – apples and fucking oranges… So, when you start talking about black people you are talking about people originating from Africa, and if you do so, then look at our entire fucking race, which extends from Africa (Senegal to south Africa, and look at us as a whole, and in the light of whites trying to ripe us off while you are helping them and kissing there ass )

The Korean owner is correct.
The professional blacks should go back to africa - the black engineer, finance, entreprenurss who have their opporutinities stolen by Korean-White collusion (like the one in Madagascar) should have a stronger presence in Africa and leave the US to whites and Koreans or other asian and latios... good article...
Obviously there are good blacks and bad blacks just like there are good koreans and bad one's too... We, in this country, shower asians and non-african americans with hop.. while clearly robbing Afro-Amer, and we know it, yet we act like its there fault...
African Americans are not a nation within this nation, they are just a small group (10%) and the world holds them accountable....for every dam thing on this planet.... I failed to see the correlation between space travel and high crime a mile away from the space shuttle... WTF:.. At the end of the day, african americans are actually contributing to the world through the unethical research (asians doctors and white racists are undertaking) to fragment faimiles, drive mental health attactks, and still their business ideas through psuedo business development organizations....

Good for the owner. Stop insulting Africans by associating these useless blacks with them. He is a black American not an African American. Africa is a continent not a color you idiot.

I am an African-American woman who was partly raised by a loving Korean family that happened to own a gas station next to the apartment building I lived in when I was a child in Torrance California. My parents were seperated at the time and the children of the gas station owner we all attended the same school. After school they hated waiting at the gas station so they came to my house until "AMA" (Koren for mother) picked them up. AMA, hated leaving me home alone that she made me come home with them. This continued for many years and I found myself going to Saturday Korean school with them, family functions and was generally accepted as their child. I spoke Korean and was on my
way to Korea with the family when the Olympics in the 80's were there. My mother was afraid to let me go but my relationship with my Korean family remained till I went off to college. Koreans are misunderstood by blacks as are most Asian races. Its unfortunate because they value the same thing blacks use to value. Family and education, and working hard to achieve our dreams. Rather than debate if the two men were right or wrong I'd look at the misconceptions they have of each others culture.

Well, actually, first of all, what I've heard, the korean didn't do this first, he just had a great day at his store and the preacher came in and because the korean couldn't speak English, the african said," why don't you go back to your own country?" first, that's when the korean shop owner kind of got ticked. Well, actually, really ticked, so actually the Korean talked back, and he had the right to! Every man is created equal and I'm a Korean American, and I have a bunch of African American friends that sometimes just joke around saying "Ming Ching Wang," and "Chink," or "Go eat rotten vegetables" or "do you like that north korean dictator" But "Go back to your Country?" By a Preacher? Are you kidding me? If one of my friends said that, I would gone off on him really good. And I think they should both apologize. And it is really wrong to say "broke a-- n-------" but you african societies should think us for doing beauty supplies and gas stations. I mean, if the economy wasn't bad, we would have stayed in our country. But I hope you people don't feel offended. That KOREAN at least has the gumption to start a gas station. What If He doesn't know that much English? So what? My dad survived in America for nearly 17 years and he hasn't perfected English, but he owns a shop and he doesn't have any trouble with african Americans saying something to him. So, what i'm trying to say, the gas station owner is helping out in the community here!!! Why don't you people show some respect, and we'll show some respect to you people.

I think a lot of the comments on both sides of the argument are pretty fucking unnecessary and unintelligent. The black guy shouldn't have been racist in the first place, and the Korean guy was wrong for retaliating. Seeing as I am black, I think I can honestly say that the race card needs to stop being played. None of us are taken seriously because a few butthurt individuals take it upon themselves to represent an entire race. It's irritating and sickening. The only race in America who didn't originate somewhere else are Native Americans. :/ When people immigrate to America, they expect to have a better life, an equal life, and they get treated like crap. What everyone happened to thet"American Melting Pot?"
Also, it's a goddamn shame that I'm sixteen and I have a better sense of equality /justice than half the "adults " here.
