Comcast to Launch Two Latino TV Channels

Latino-themed TV networks are becoming "muy caliente," reports the New York Post.

Comcast, the parent company of NBCLatino, announced this week it is launching two new Hispanic TV cable channels, El Rey and BabyFirst Americas. El Rey, proposed by Hollywood director Robert Rodriguez and FactoryMade Ventures, will be an action-packed, entertainment network in English for both Latino and general audiences. It will launch in January 2014. BabyFirst America will be a network designed for infants, toddlers and their parents. BabyFirst is scheduled to launch by April 2012.

Comcast, as part of the NBCUniversal transaction, volunteered to create 10 new independently owned channels over eight years. Four of the 10 networks will be majority African-American owned, two will be operated by Latino programmers and two will offer independent programs.

The announcement came on the heels of announcements by News Corp., Univision and Disney-ABC and that they were also launching their own Latino-themed networks. Earlier this month, Univision announced a partnership with Disney-ABC to launch an English-language 24-hour news channel based in Miami. In January, News Corp. said it would launch Spanish-language TV network MundoFox in the fall.
