DETROIT—Hundreds demonstrated at Hart Plaza here on Monday in support of Trayvon Martin, the 17-year-old black teenager who was shot and killed by a neighborhood watch volunteer in Sanford, Florida, reports The Arab American News. Several similar rallies are taking place nationally.
According to the news report, many Arab American leaders, including Arab American Civil Rights League founder Nabih Ayad, and executive director Rashid Baydoun expressed solidarity at the demonstration.
Abayomi Azikiwe of the Michigan Emergency Committee Against War and Injustice, spoke at the event also addressing the recent death of Shaima Alawadi, a 32-year-old Iraqi American Muslim mother of five who was residing in Southern California. Alawadi, who wore a hijab, (traditional headscarf) was found beaten and unconscious in her home last Wednesday. Next to her was a note that said she was a “terrorist” and to “go back” to her “home country.”
“It seems like a clear hate crime...people of color need to unite to combat racism,” he said.
