California Appoints Its First Latino Poet Laureate

Juan Felipe Herrera has been appointed California's Poet Laureate, the first Latino to hold the position. Born in California’s Central Valley, 63-year-old Herrera is the son of Mexican migrant farmers. He is the author of 28 books, including the award-winning “Half of the World in Light: New and Selected Poems,” and currently teaches creative writing at the University of California, Riverside.
