The Department of Homeland Security on Monday will post for public comment a change that would cut down on the time undocumented immigrants with U.S.-citizen family members spend away from their families while applying for a legal visa. Under the current system, applicants must leave the U.S. to apply for legal status, sometimes causing families to be separated for months. The administrative change would allow applicants to stay in the U.S. while applying for a visa, and require them to leave the country briefly only after the application has been approved.
