Ala. Governor Signs Revision of Immigration Law
Alabama Gov. Robert Bentley on Friday signed a new law that revises and expands some parts of the state's immigration law HB 56, considered to be the toughest in the nation. The new law, House Bill 658, requires the state Department of Homeland Security to publish online the names of undocumented immigrants who appear in any state court; and calls for school children in the state's K-12 system to have their immigration status checked when they enroll.
Civil rights groups including the Southern Poverty Law Center and the ACLU have criticized the newly revised law. In an editorial published Friday, the Birminghmam News editorial board argued that the governor should have vetoed the immigration law revision.
