U.S. to Increase Deportations Deeper into Mexico

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) is stepping up efforts to deport undocumented immigrants with criminal records. ICE launched the effort without public notice May 14, assigning an additional 150 agents, a nearly 25 percent increase in personnel, to track down and deport undocumented immigrants who have criminal records.

The United States and Mexico are also in talks to start deporting undocumented immigrants who have criminal records deeper into Mexico instead of releasing them at the border. Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano signed a memorandum of cooperation with Mexican officials in February.

Critics say the moves are politically motivated to help President Barack Obama’s re-election campaign.
