14-year-old Chinese golfer Andy Zhang is the youngest player to compete in the US Open. Zhang got his chance to make history when Brandt Snedeker withdrew from the tournament with an injured rib and Paul Casey withdrew with a shoulder injury. Zhang was asked to replace Casey in the 156-man field.

Zhang is originally from China and spent the bulk of his childhood in Beijing. He first picked up a golf club at the age of six, and began working with a Korean coach at the age of seven. Zhang moved to the United States when he was 10 years old after his mother Hui Li recognized his talent.

According to New Tang Dynasty Television, when Zhang received the call to inform him that he has gotten into U.S. open, Zhang said " my mind just went blank". Zhang also thanked his mother. "My mom quit her job when I was eight and was there to support me ever since," Zhang said. "I wouldn't be here without her."

Chinese media reported that when Zhang won the U.S. Kids Golf title in Guangzhou in 2008, he said "I want to play as well as Tiger Woods does." At that moment, Zhang was only 10 years old.
