California’s Korean community is celebrating the success of a Korean-American candidate for U.S. Congress, reports the Korea Times. Irvine Mayor Sukhee Kang received 33.3 percent of the vote in yesterday’s primary, coming in second place. The Democrat will now move onto the general election in November. Kang will compete for representation of California’s 45th Congressional district against Republican incumbent John Campbell, who received 51 percent of the vote. John Webb, another Republican candidate, received only 15.7 percent of the vote, failing to finish among the top two. As a result of newly adopted Top Two Candidates Open Primary Act in California, the top two vote-getters in the primary election – regardless of party affiliation – move on to the general election.

“I appreciate the wholehearted support from the Korean community which has greatly helped me succeed in all the elections so far,” Kang said. “I will do my best for the remaining five months to win the general election, and to live up to the expectations of California Koreans.”
