Korean App Presents Competition for Mobile Phone Companies
A Korean mobile phone app that has replaced text messaging is now beginning free broadband services. Smartphone users can now send text messages or make calls for free if they install the app on their phones. Kakao Talk currently has about 47 million subscribers -- 36 million in Korea and 11 million abroad -- virtually replacing text messaging service among Korean smartphone users. Most subscribers welcomed the free phone service, but mobile service providers are upset, claiming it would overload their networks. is now branching out into the United States.
