Muslim Brotherhood Candidate Mohamed Morsi Wins Egypt's Presidential Election
Egypt’s electoral commission announced today that Mohammed Morsi has officially won that country’s presidential election and will be the country’s next president, reports Al Jazeera English.
According to the news report, Morsi, who represents the Muslim Brotherhood’s Freedom and Justice Party (FJP) and taught at California State University, Northridge, received 13.2 million votes out of 26 million votes cast. Morsi’s competitor, Ahmed Shafiq, who served as the final prime minister under Hosni Mubarak, picked up 12.3 million, and more than 800,000 votes were invalidated.
Egypt’s presidential election were conducted on May 23 and 24, with a final run-off election between Morsi and Shafiq June 16 and 17. Morsi claimed victory early on June 18, with 52.5 percentage points, five more than Shafiq’s 47.5 percent. The Supreme Presidential Elections Commission announced shortly after however that their final decision would be delayed until a review of all the ballots was completed.
Shortly before the polls closed last week, the Supreme Council of Armed Forces (SCAF) dissolved Egypt’s parliament, which was newly elected earlier this year and had majority of its members from the FJP and issued a Constitutional Declaration that limits the new president’s powers and gives SCAF control of legislative authority, powers of arrest, control over the armed forces and the right to veto wars, until a new parliament is elected.
