SAN JOSE-- Chinese American Anna Li qualified last Sunday to attend the 2012 Olympic Games in London as one of the three alternates on the U.S. women's gymnastics team. Li, graduated from UCLA, is the only Chinese on the team.

According to Sing Tao, 16-year-old girls who stand 5 feet and weigh 100 pounds are the ideal in women's gymnastics world. However, Li is 23 years old, 5 foot 4 and 118 pounds. Her history of
injuries include two surgically repaired broken feet, and her relatively lack of versatility could also diminish her chances. Yet, Li 's improbable Olympic dream was playing out in San Jose.

"I just couldn't believe it when my name was announced. " Li told Sing Tao. Li's parents, Yuejiu Li and Jiani Wu, who were Olympic medalists in 1984 for China, are Li's coaches. Wu said to Sing Tao that "I'm so happy for my girl. It was not easy for her since her latest injuries forced her into surgery which results in missing months of training. "

Yuejiu Li told Sing Tao that " My girl is a specialist and very good on bars, and they need that. But only five kids could go. Anything could happen, but at this point, to make it to the trials is pretty good already. We’re really proud. We’re just really happy to see her reach her goals."
