CA TRUST Act Heads to Governor's Desk
LOS ANGELES -- The California Assembly on Friday passed AB 1081, the TRUST Act, which would change the way local law enforcement in California interacts with federal immigration authorities. Under the TRUST Act, authored by Assemblymember Tom Ammiano, local law enforcement would not be required to detain non-criminal immigrants on immigration holds while waiting to turn them over to immigration authorities. The bill would give local law enforcement clear guidelines on when they can refrain from submitting to immigration holds from Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), while still allowing holds for those convicted of serious or violent felonies. The bill now heads to the desk of Gov. Jerry Brown for his signature.
