Ed. Note: The start of fall courses at City College of San Francisco was greeted with large protests, as students, faculty and supporters gathered to denounce cuts, fee hikes and a looming threat to shut down California’s largest community college. The school was hit with a major crisis in July when the state’s Accrediting Commission for Community and Junior Colleges threatened to revoke its accreditation for 14 “failures,” including weak leadership and overspending. In response, emergency meetings were convened across the city, including one in July at the city’s LGBTQ Center. Some 350 people gathered to express their concerns and call on the city to stand behind an institution that has been serving residents for more than 70 years.
