Chicago Teachers Say Strike Is About More Than Money
CHICAGO -- Hispanic teachers in Chicago's public schools said the Chicago teachers' strike -- the first in 25 years, which entered its second day on Tuesday -- is about more than money, reports the Spanish news service EFE. Teachers said they are also striking to bring attention to the lack of resources, inequality between different schools and the evaluation system for teachers that is based largely on their students' standardized test scores. Under the new evaluation system, some 6,000 teachers in Chicago could be laid off in its first two years, according to the Chicago Teachers' Union. Teachers said some schools don't receive textbooks until the middle of the school year. Others are teaching in classrooms that are overcrowded and have no air conditioning, making it difficult for students to concentrate.
