The international community today congratulated the Philippine government and the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) for finalizing the landmark framework peace agreement between them, according to the most recent report from GMA News.
In a separate article, the Philippine TV network said that the Philippine government and the country’s largest secessionist group, the MILF, have agreed to create a new political entity called "Bangsamoro" to replace the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARMM).
President Benigno Aquino III made this announcement Oct. 7 after the latest round of talks between the two parties. It was the 32nd round of such talks between the two parties over the last nine years.
Foreign embassies in Manila expressed their support for the accord, saying it would foster lasting peace and stability in strife-ridden Mindanao, the site of numerous violent battles between government troops and Muslim rebels.
United States Ambassador Harry Thomas welcomed the developments.
Japan contributed to the peace process through its membership in the International Contact Group.
