The billboards, which have gone up in predominately black communities in Austin, Dallas and Houston, read: "Martin Luther King, Jr. was a Republican. VOTE REPUBLICAN." At the bottom of a billboard is a website address for the Raging Elephants and their slogan, "Leading America's 2nd Emancipation."
The billboard in Memphis is even more simple in its appeal, touting, "MARTIN LUTHER KING JR. WAS A REPUBLICAN, SO IS CHARLOTTE BERGMANN. CHARLOTTE BERGMANN FOR CONGRESS."
The claims are flawed at best and outright lies at worst. But it doesn't look like that is going to stop people from using them.
“The use of Dr. King, because of him being an icon in the community, we feel would be most effective. That’s why we used it,” said Claver Kamau-Imani, the head of Raging Elephants. “We have the documentation to back the claims we’re making on the billboard.”
