Supreme Court to Review Prop 8, DOMA
The U.S. Supreme Court announced on Friday that it will review two major cases related to marriage equality. One is a challenge to the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA), the federal statute that denies same-sex couples the same federal benefits and protections that heterosexual married couples receive. The second case is a challenge to the Ninth Circuit Court’s decision on California’s Prop 8. The Ninth Circuit Court ruled earlier this year that Prop 8, the 2008 voter-approved initiative to ban same-sex marriage in the state, was unconstitutional. The Supreme Court's decision on the two cases is not expected until next June.
