Editor’s note:
Hundreds of young Bangladeshis, united by online and social media networks, turned out on March 24 in 40 cities in 11 countries to show solidarity with a youth-led movement that began in Bangladesh. Protestors in the “Shahbag movement” are demanding the maximum punishment for convicted war criminals in the 1971 War of Independence. The youth movement is also calling for a ban on the Islamist Jamaat-i-Islami party, which harbors most of the suspects currently under trial. Contributor Ashfaque Swapan documents the multi-city protests.
