Argentine Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio has been elected the 266th pope, to be known as Pope Francis I. He is the first Latin American and first Jesuit elected leader of the Catholic Church. Bergoglio clashed with the Argentine government over his opposition to same-sex marriage. Critics accuse him of failing to take a public stance against the military dictatorship of Argentina, which "disappeared" tens of thousands of people during the country's so-called Dirty War (1976-1983).
