A young Indian American woman from New York, reportedly in an abusive marriage, was found dead last month hanging from a bathroom ceiling of the Kathmandu, Nepal home she shared with her husband and his family.

The family of Bhoomika Kochhar, 25, has launched an intensive campaign to find out the cause of her mysterious death, with help from Congressman Steve Israel.

Kochhar met her future husband, Akaash Jatia in 2006, when the two were students at Brown University. After a five-year courtship, the couple got married in an elaborate wedding. Kochhar then moved to Nepal with her husband and his family.

Kochhar's sister, Donna, said that in conversations with her sister, her sister told her she was being mistreated by her husband and his family, who wanted to control everything, down to the food she could eat and where she could go.

The Kochhars contacted the Congressman after Nepali authorities were unresponsive to their requests to investigate the death.
