South Asians in Silicon Valley are being victimized by telephone scammers who are pretending to be IRS agents, police department officers or utility company officials seeking back taxes owed to the IRS or money owed for overdue utility bills.

The Fremont Police Department July 24 issued an alert warning about the scams and said that “based on the profile of the most recent victims, it appears that suspects may be targeting our South Asian Indian community.”

In its advisory notice, the Fremont Police Department said victims are typically being asked to make payments through Money Pak.
