NAACP and Klan Meet for the "First Time"

The NAACP and the United Klans of America recently held a meeting in Casper, Wyoming, and although it is being billed as the first meeting between the NAACP and the white-terrorist organization, it is not the first meeting between the Klan and other black leaders.

Malcolm X of the National of Islam and Marcus Garvey, founder of the United Negro Improvement Association, met with different factions of the Klan decades apart because the organizations’ shared the belief in separation of the races. Black leaders strongly criticized Malcolm X and Garvey for the meetings.

Malcolm X, under orders from the Honorable Elijah Muhammad, leader of the Chicago-based National of Islam, met with the KKK, according to Manning Marable's biography, Malcolm X: A Life of Reinvention.
