DETROIT--People work their whole lives to save up money for retirement, but one out of every 20 elders who is supposed to be enjoying the Golden Years now faces the challenge of dealing with financial exploitation. Victims lose anywhere from $79,000 to $186,000 or more.

Dr. Peter Lichtenberg, director of the Institute of Gerontology at Wayne State University, in Detroit, discusses his research findings on the multiple ways older adults are exploited on WDET public radio’s “Craig Fahle Show.”

The segment was produced by Martina Guzman though the MetLife Foundation Journalists in Aging Fellows Program, a project of New America Media and the Gerontological Society of America.
