Rep. David Valadao, R-Calif., on Wednesday became the third Republican to cosponsor the House Democrats' immigration reform bill HR15, which includes a pathway to citizenship for the nation's 11 million undocumented immigrants. Valadao, the son of Portuguese immigrants whose family runs a dairy farm, said his background, and that of his district, which is 72 percent Hispanic, was a factor in his decision. Valadao joins Rep. Jeff Denham, R-Calif., and Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, R-Fla., in supporting the comprehensive bill, although the majority of Republicans in the House still say they would prefer to address immigration reform through separate piecemeal measures. The bill would need the support of 218 lawmakers for passage in the House. It would then be taken into a conference committee to work out a compromise between the House bill and the bill that passed in the Senate in June.
