Beginning next year, no New Yorker will be undocumented who doesn't want to be, at least in the Big Apple.

Mayor Bill de Blasio last Thursday signed a bill that allows all New Yorkers -- regardless of their immigration status -- to get a free municipal ID beginning in January 2015.

The cards will make it easier for the estimated 500,000 undocumented immigrants living in New York to access basic rights.  It is also expected to benefit elder and homeless residents.

The cards will be accepted by all city agencies to enter their buildings and benefit from their services, including public schools. They can also be used to file complaints with the police and to present to police in the case of an arrest.
