Former President Bill Clinton suggested that President Barack Obama has the legal authority to issue an executive order that would influence immigration.

“As far as I can tell every president in the modern era has issued some executive orders affecting immigration, so I think it—I imagine he’s on pretty firm legal footing,” Clinton said at an event celebrating the 100th year of the magazine The New Republic. Former presidents Ronald Reagan and George H. W. Bush both exercised their executive authority during their terms by pardoning family members who were not included under the Immigration Reform and Control Act of 1986.

Clinton also said Americans should look positively toward the future of the country, as good things could come to the US if it establishes inclusive politics and economics.

“In a world where borders look more like nets than walls, we are interdependent whether we like it or not, so the only thing that remains is to define the terms of our independence,” Clinton said. Clinton’s comments were made on Wednesday, November 19, the night before Obama was scheduled to announce his administration’s plan to grant amnesty to up to 5 million undocumented immigrants. -
