Did AB60 Lead to a Spike in Organ Donators?

The increase in undocumented immigrants getting driver's licenses in California -- a result of the law AB 60, which went into effect this year -- could be a contributing factor in a surprising health outcome: More people are now signing up to be organ donors on their licenses. Spanish-language news service EFE reports that between January and March, some 56,000 people signed up to be organ donors, which represents a 30 percent increase. But as New America Media reported in December 2014, undocumented immigrants are able to donate organs but not eligible to receive them.
