BEIJING — President Rodrigo Duterte announced that he is breaking both in military and economic aspects from the United States (US), the Philippine’s longtime ally.

During the Philippines-China Trade and Investment Forum on Thursday, October 20, Duterte said he would now be relying on the Chinese officials and businessmen.

“I announce my separation from the United States both in the military…not social, but economics also. So please you have another problem of economics in my country,” Duterte declared in front of Chinese businessmen and government officials, earning a standing ovation.

“I have separated from them so I will be dependent on you for a long time but don’t worry we will also help,” he added.

The president also expressed that he prefers the Chinese compared to the Americans, describing the latter as “loud, sometimes rowdy,” adding that their “larynx is not adjusted to civility.”

“Duterte of the Philippines is veering towards China because China has the character of an Oriental. It does not go around insulting people,” he said, earning a  loud applause.
