A little bit about New America Media (NAM):
New America Media is the country's first and largest national collaboration and advocate of 2000 ethnic news organizations. Over 51 million ethnic adults connect to each other, to home countries and to America through 3000+ ethnic media, the fastest growing sector of American journalism.

Founded by the nonprofit Pacific News Service in 1996, NAM is headquartered in California with offices in New York and Washington D.C., and partnerships with journalism schools to grow local associations of ethnic media. Want to know more? Check out the About Us page for more information.

What will you do while you're interning at NAM?
If you're an editorial intern: You will work closely with a beat editor who will help steer you towards assignments that interest you, but also assign you stories that NAM needs to cover. There will also be opportunities to work with both audio and video elements of journalism. You will also be responsible for monitoring where your story is picked up in ethnic media.While working with your editor/mentor, you will get an idea about how an ethnic news organization covers stories that don't get press in mainstream media as well as how an editorial team works. All editorial interns will also be required to write for the EthnoBlog, NAM's blog, once a week.

If you're a marketing intern: You will work closely with the marketing team on either one larger project or several smaller ones. NAM does multiple marketing campaigns at one time, so you will learn how to manage your time and juggle responsibilities. You will also learn how to communicate with clients as well as with the ethnic media we are trying to reach out to.

Digital Divide Project Internship in communications and marketing: Interns will assist in promoting NAM's hyperlocal ethnic news websites featuring daily local news stories from our partners in Los Angeles, San Jose and New Orleans. Reponsibilities include:

  • helping our Digital Divide Project promote ethnic media partners and their stories;
  • promoting the Beez hyperlocal news websites through social media platforms (Twitter, Facebook and Flickr) and monitoring web traffic patterns;
  • assisting NAM webmaster in daily publication of ethnic media stories on Beez websites;
  • working with NAM/Beez Marketing Teams in implementing communications and marketing strategies for the Beez hyperlocal websites.

All intern responsibilities:
In addition to your responsibilities as a marketing or editorial intern, you will be required to update 30 entries in our Ethnic Media Directory. In a time when publications and newspapers are constantly evolving and closing their doors, NAM works hard to keep up with all of those changes.

You will also be required to attend a mandatory orientation meeting where we will give a tour of the office, the different parts of NAM and a tutorial on how to updated the Ethnic Media Directory and what you hope to accomplish over the next 10 weeks.

To apply for an internship at NAM, please send an email to Dana Levine (dlevine@newamericamedia.org). Clearly state which internship session you are applying for and why you want to work with New America Media. Please attach your resume in either a .pdf or .doc format.
