The California Endowment - Senior Communications Assistant
Location: Los Angeles
Department: Healthy California
Position Summary:
Responsible for conducting and/or coordinating media relations activities for The California Endowment’s Communications and Media department and for raising awareness of the media of the health issues impacting underserved communities and all Californians.
Primary Responsibilities:
Draft and disseminate press releases and pitch letters to promote The Endowment’s programmatic and grant-making activities.
Participate in activities for the implementation of strategic communications objectives as outlined in the department’s Strategic Communications Plan.
Coordinate and participate in media relations activities for launches of The Endowment’s strategic initiatives.
Answer the telephone promptly, respond to inquiries and requests for information, provide assistance, or direct calls to the appropriate party in a timely manner.
Read and respond to incoming correspondence and prepare outgoing communications.
Manage the flow of information from multiple sources into the department or departments; prioritize and delegate activities, coordinate responses, and ensure appropriate documentation is maintained at all times.
Maintain calendars and synchronize with master department calendar as needed; make necessary arrangements for appointments, meetings, seminars, conferences, or travel in a timely manner.
Routinely schedule appointments and other events, notifying all participants in a timely manner.
Make travel arrangements and prepare and process expense reports.
Provide logistical support to meetings and other events to ensure successful outcomes; locate meeting sites and arrange catering, audiovisual and other room/meeting requirements, may provide other meeting support such as agenda and materials preparation, attend meetings and record and distribute minutes or other meeting documentation.
Establish and maintain relationships with media; work with Communications and Media Managers to maintain The Endowment’s media contact and video database; and maintain records of all media inquiries.
Draft and disseminate new staff and Board member announcements and biographies.
Draft The California Endowment Communications and Media department-related contracts.
Conduct research and provide analysis as needed on a variety of topics impacting philanthropy, communications, and/or multicultural health.
Provide cross-functional support as needed to the Communications and Media Department by drafting newsletter articles and proofreading of The Endowment’s commissioned reports, as well as keeping media and contact databases current.
Qualifications:
Candidates must have strong writing skills and be proactive, mature, organized, and deadline/detail-oriented.
Proficiency in Microsoft Office and experience in electronic scheduling, travel arrangements, and reimbursement processes as well as excellent research skills.
Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
Excellent organizational skills and the ability to work independently.
Candidates should have a willingness to learn how to use a variety of research-based tools (e.g., Factiva, Bacons Media Monitoring, and Research Modules, GIFTS, etc.) and be proficient in Microsoft Word.
Fluency in both English and Spanish a strong plus.
Minimum Education:
A strong academic background, with a bachelor’s degree. Interest in multicultural health issues is helpful.
Minimum Experience:
Administrative support experience in a multi-task, deadline oriented environment. Experience in a grant making, nonprofit, journalism, media, or related institution a plus.

The California Endowment- Media Manager
Location: Los Angeles

Position Summary
This position is responsible for developing and producing media-based communications for The California Endowment’s Building Healthy Communities program in line with The Endowment’s overall strategic communications plan including: video, audio, digital, web-based, PDA, social and new media as well as executing those strategies
Primary Responsibilities:
Develops media approached that are in line with the strategic vision, either independently or as part of a team.
Prepares and presents written proposals for media strategies and projects.
Recruits and manages the work of outside media producers as well as technical assistance providers to the 14 places.
Makes contract approval recommendations for management review and approval.
Develops, manages and complies with budgets.
Develops excellent working relationships with all TCE staff, especially its program managers both on the policy and place sides as well as anyone involved with TCE programs, grants or events
Develops media story-telling techniques and approaches to enable the Healthy California side of TCE to communicate its policy.
Oversees the recruitment and training of individuals residing within the 14 communities to act as local media producers and story-tellers, especially the youth. Media Manager will provide technical assistance as needed or requested by the Healthy Communities team.
Insures that whatever online infrastructure exists to communicate TCE and BHC-related content has a consistent stream of new content.
Manage all contracts (DCA and Administrative) of outside vendors that aid in production of multimedia projects.
Remains current in all issues and trends in all media as well as well-aware of all of TCE’s work and programs.
Establishes and maintains collaborative and cooperative working relationships with TCE management and staff.
Maintains appropriate confidentiality.
Ensures compliance with organizational policies and procedures.
Completes special projects as assigned.
The Media Manager will maintain the highest personal and professional standards and is evaluated against attributes which include the following: conceptual and analytic ability; written and oral communication skills; professional integrity; judgment; vision and creativity; attention to detail and follow through; programmatic knowledge base; management of paper flow and time; cultural competence; collegiality and collaboration; and human relations and supervisory skills.

Candidate must have basic knowledge of video production, especially field production (some background in new media production preferred, but not required).
Candidate’s ability to speak Spanish a plus.
Candidate must have a valid California driver’s license.
